I LOVE to collect cookbooks! Maybe you do, too? I love the recipes, but more than that, I love the unexpected stories, history, flabbergasting facts and more that you often find embedded in cookbooks.
I love to write cookbooks—mostly for the same reasons—the recipes are fine, but it’s the historical background, or person who created the recipe originally, or humorous facts, even legend, lore, and most anything extra that really spices things up for me!
Here’s a photo of just one row of my cookbook collection. The books aren’t organized in any special way. Like kids, I know where they are, almost without looking! Some were bought, some were gifts, some I might have even snitched (but don’t tell anyone!). On any given day I have different favorites. Today…
•Who Put the Devil in Deviled Eggs?
The fascinating stories behind America’s favorite foods
•Sook’s Cookbook
Sook Faulk was immortalized in Truman Capote’s “A Christmas Memory”
•The Potato
How the humble spud rescued the Western World
•Pigsfoot Jelly & Persimmon Beer
Foodways from the Virginia Writers’ Project
•The Secret Life of Food
There are potato and asparagus flip-flops on the cover…what more can I say?!
•Texas Cowboy Cooking
by Tom Perini who has a ranch and a restaurant in Buffalo Gap, Texas
Food is one thing you can immerse yourself in…inside and out. Cookbooks are the window to the world of food. I hope in future blogs to intrigue you, educate you, and make your mouth water water water!
